Huracanes y tormentas tropicales: Cómo afectan a los accidentes de tráfico

Hurricane season in Florida is typically a more challenging time. Known by most as the “Sunshine State,” the weather is not always sunny and perfect. Native Floridians are all too familiar with this time of year. As we all know, (Attorney Kevin Sullivan is a native Floridian as well), more severe weather means that motorists must be prepared for harsh driving conditions. The best solution to avoid weather-related car accidents? Stay put during the harsh weather. However, if you absolutely must drive, operate your vehicle with extreme caution.

How Many Car Accidents Are Related To Weather Conditions?

As stated above, bad weather absolutely contributes to the number of car accidents each year. In fact, according to the NHTSA, an average of 1,235,000 car accidents each year are weather-related. This was based on a study done over 10 years. Moreover, most of these are due to either wet pavement and/or due to rainfall. Roughly 860,000 crashes are due to wet pavement whereas about 556,000 crashes on average are related to rain fall. The numbers say it all. When it comes to a severe weather, make sure to avoid the roads.

What Storm Conditions Cause More Car Accidents?

Severe storms such as hurricanes and tropical storms bring on certain hazardous conditions. With more hazardous conditions comes the increased likelihood of a car accident. These conditions include but are not limited to:

– Rain

– Fog

– Wind

– Poor Visibility

– Wet Pavement

– Road hazards (fallen trees, down power lines)

If you must go out in a storm, be sure that your vehicle is well maintained, operate with extreme caution, and do not drive through flooded roadways. Just a few inches of water can cause you to lose control of your vehicle or, your vehicle may stall. With a foot of water, some vehicles may begin to float.

What Can You Do To Stay Off The Roads During Hurricane Season?

The best way to avoid a car accident during hurricane season is to stay off the road. Be sure that you monitor when a storm is coming. Typically, you will know weeks in advance before the hurricane or tropical storm is on its way. Stock up on food and necessities well in advance. Take any trips you need to make to the store, office, or medical provider beforehand. Make sure to secure both the interior and exterior of your home. Most importantly, have a plan.
